Commonplace, an exhibition of work by members of Gilkes Street Artists, a Middlesbrough-based studio group. In Commonplace, the artists investigated their personal ideas of the everyday experience through painting, printmaking, mixed media and tapestry weaving. Featured artists – Emma Bennett, Dianne Bowell, Ray Husband, Leanne Jackson, Brian Russell, Dot Seddon, Jenni Thirlwell and John Wheeler.
Formed in 2012 at the Cleveland Crafts Centre in Middlesbrough, Gilkes Street Artists are a voluntary organisation focusing on providing affordable studio spaces and support for emerging artists and creative professionals. In 2014 when the Crafts Centre building was sold the artists moved over the road to the Brentnall Business Centre, 65 Gilkes Street where they continue to work from. They hold regular open studio events and exhibit annually as a group within the Teesside area; this will be their first exhibition in the Darlington area.
“THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXHIBIT AT CROWN STREET ART GALLERY GAVE THE GROUP AN INCENTIVE TO SEEK OUT FURTHER EXHIBITIONS OUTSIDE MIDDLESBROUGH. THIS RESULTED IN GILKES STREET ARTISTS SECURING AN EXHIBITION OF THEIR NEW WORK AT KIRKLEATHAM MUSEUM IN MAY 2019”
